FRCS Basic Science Exam: Why “Basic” Is the Whole Secret (And How to Actually Pass It)

2 min read

It’s called “basic” science for a reason. Here’s the exam strategy that actually works.

Quick one for anyone prepping for the Trauma & Orthopaedic Basic Science section of the FRCS.

Somewhere along the way, candidates start treating Basic Science like it’s the hardest, most academic part of the exam. It isn’t meant to be. The clue is in the name: basic science. Not complex science.

Examiners aren’t trying to catch you out with niche biochemistry — they want to know you understand the fundamentals well enough to apply them to a real patient in front of you.

Here’s the real skill: if you can’t explain a concept simply enough for a GCSE student with zero background in Trauma & Orthopaedics to follow it, you don’t understand it well enough for the exam. Keep it simple, keep it clinical, and you’ll sound as confident as you actually are.

That’s the entire philosophy behind our Basic Science in Practice course — internationally renowned as the No.1 Basic Science course for the FRCS. It takes the whole syllabus and puts it into the exact clinical scenarios you’ll be examined on, taught by Dr Rishi, whose love of basic science (and reputation as one of the best teachers in the world) comes through in every session.

Booking also gets you access to our award-winning Basic Science On-Demand video course, so you can build your foundations in your own time, wherever you’re studying in the world.

🗓️ The next course runs online THIS WEEKEND — 5th & 6th September. All sessions are recorded also.

Prefer to start with the on-demand videos first?

See you this weekend,
